KABUL: The Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, in a statement rejected the UNAMA’s concerns regarding freedom of expression and women’s rights and called it far from reality, and contrary to Islamic, religious, and social values.
In a report on Sunday, UNAMA accused the Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice for violating the human rights situation in Afghanistan, as well as limiting freedom of expression and women’s rights.
The ministry rejecting the UNAMA’s report said these claims are unfounded and based on a Western perspective.
In the report, UNAMA said: “The Ministry’s officials do not allow women to go out to do business without a mahram (male guardian).”
The law on the promotion of virtue only requires the presence of a male guardian for journeys exceeding 72 kilometers, emphasizing the safety, dignity, and needs of women, said the ministry.
“UNAMA should not ignore the ministry’s achievements in protecting women’s rights, including forced marriage, inheritance, dowry, alimony, and preventing domestic violence,” said the ministry.
The ministry urged UNAMA to not ignore the truth and to respect the Afghan culture, and religious, and Islamic values of the people.
UNAMA’s concerns regarding Afghan women baseless and contrary to Islamic values, says ministry
