Emergency Security Council meeting on Iran; China, Russia, and Pakistan propose ceasefire resolution

KABUL: Following the U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council was held at Tehran’s request on Sunday.
During the meeting, China, Russia, and Pakistan proposed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Iran and the Israeli regime.
This resolution requires approval from 9 of the 15 council members without a veto from any of the permanent members.
The resolution strongly condemns the Israeli regime’s attacks and the targeting of Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Although the timeline for voting on this resolution remains unclear, reports suggest it is unlikely to be vetoed by the U.S., as the country is unwilling to condemn its own involvement in the strikes.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the bombing of U.S. nuclear facilities by Iran represents a dangerous escalation.
He emphasized the need for immediate actions to stop the conflict.
The Chinese representative at the UN Security Council condemned the U.S. airstrikes on Iran and asserted that peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved through force.
The Russian representative also stated that the U.S. attack was conducted without any provocation from Iran. Vasily Nebenzia accused the U.S. of ignoring the international community, adding that the U.S. considers itself the “ultimate judge.”
The U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities have elicited widespread reactions both regionally and globally, including from policymakers across both U.S. political parties.
