KABUL: Gilles Bertrand, the new European Union representative for Afghanistan, stated that the EU’s collaboration in preserving Afghanistan’s historical artifacts will continue.
The Ministry of Information and Culture issued a statement today, stating that the EU’s special representative for Afghanistan expressed hope to make a significant contribution in his role during his first visit to Kabul, where he met with Shaikh Sher Mohammad Haqqani, the Minister of Information and Culture.
He also discussed efforts to empower the media in Afghanistan, highlighting the current state of the media in the country.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and Culture expressed gratitude for the EU’s cooperation with Afghanistan, noting that historical artifacts are a shared asset of nations and that efforts have been made to preserve them.
Shaikh Sher Ahmad Haqqani mentioned that the Ministry is committed to strengthening the media sector and addressing existing challenges, considering it a fundamental duty.
He affirmed that journalists are entitled to their rights within the framework of Islamic values and policies.
Since the return of the Islamic Emirate to power, approximately 180 new institutions and media outlets have received operating licenses.
He stated that the safety and security of journalists have been ensured, with no reports of journalist fatalities to date.
He called for the continuation of cooperation between the EU and other relevant institutions within the Ministry of Information and Culture.
It is noteworthy that the EU recently appointed Gilles Bertrand as its new representative for Afghanistan.
