UN accuses U.S. of International Law violations as Security Council holds an emergency meeting on Venezuela

KABUL: Rosemary DiCarlo, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated that the U.S. violated international laws in its attack on Venezuela and the arrest of the country’s president.

Ms. DiCarlo made the remarks during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council focused on Venezuela, held on Monday night.

Meanwhile, the permanent representative of Russia to the United Nations remarked that there is no justification for the “crime” committed by Washington in its attack on Venezuela. Vasily Nebenzya condemned the U.S. assault on Venezuela and urged Washington to release the Venezuelan president and his wife as soon as possible.

However, the Deputy Secretary-General emphasized that the UN Charter discusses the non-use of force against the political independence and territorial integrity of all independent states and that global order depends on the continued commitment of member states to the provisions of the Charter.

The UN Security Council held this emergency meeting at the request of Venezuela, with support from Colombia, Russia, and China, regarding the arrest of Nicolás Maduro.
