KABUL: Afghan and Iranian officials have held talks on major infrastructure initiatives, including railway development and the expansion of transportation corridors between the two countries.
According to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works, a delegation led by Deputy Minister for Railways, Mawlavi Mohammad Ishaq Sahibzada, traveled to Iran for discussions with Iranian counterparts on infrastructure projects, railway schemes, and new transit routes.
The ministry said the meeting discussed the construction plans, technical specifications and standards, implementation phases, financing structure, estimated costs of the 657-kilometer Herat–Mazar-i-Sharif railway project and the participation of Afghan and Iranian companies.
Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas said the two sides also emphasized the importance of further expanding railway and transportation cooperation between Afghanistan and Iran.
Haqshenas noted that the Herat–Mazar-i-Sharif railway is considered a key economic corridor for Afghanistan, linking northern provinces while connecting Iran and Turkey with Central Asian countries through Afghan territory.
