U.S. considers easing sanctions on ‘shadow fleet’ to cut oil shipping costs

KABUL: The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering easing sanctions on oil tankers known as the “shadow fleet” in an effort to reduce historically high global oil shipping costs.

Reuters, citing a U.S. official, reported that Washington is considering allowing sanctioned vessels to transport non-sanctioned crude oil and petroleum products.

The move follows Trump’s temporary lifting of some restrictions on Russian diesel exports, a decision that has drawn criticism from Ukraine, European countries, and some members of the U.S. Republican Party.

The potential easing of sanctions is aimed at lowering oil transportation costs and facilitating the flow of petroleum products in global markets.
