KABUL: Qatar has called for increased international assistance to Afghanistan, highlighting the humanitarian, economic, and development challenges resulting from the large-scale return of Afghan refugees.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country’s permanent mission in Geneva participated in high-level discussions on Afghan refugees and returnees and stressed the need to increase international support for Afghanistan.
According to the ministry, the meeting was held on October 14 on the sidelines of the 77th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Qatar’s delegation highlighted the humanitarian, economic and development challenges caused by the large-scale return of Afghans, emphasizing the need for greater international cooperation, increased humanitarian and development assistance, and continued constructive dialogue with Afghanistan.
The ministry said Qatar also called for stronger international coordination to address the challenges facing Afghan refugees and support the countries and communities that have hosted them for decades.
“ Providing returnees with basic services, shelter, education and livelihood opportunities is essential for their sustainable reintegration,” Qatar further stressed.
The ministry added that Qatari humanitarian and development organizations continue to assist in Afghanistan in the areas of education, healthcare and livelihoods.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry reaffirmed the country’s readiness to continue working with UNHCR and other relevant partners to find sustainable solutions for Afghan refugees and displaced people.
