Ignoring controversial issues, participation in Doha meeting is unbeneficial, MoFA

KABUL: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late on Saturday that there is no benefit in participating in the Doha meeting due to the lack of discussion and dialogue on controversial issues at the high-ranking officials of the Islamic Emirate and the United Nations.

“The Islamic Emirate had expected to participate in the Doha meeting as the responsible party on behalf of Afghanistan,” said the statement.

According to the statement, the Islamic Emirate believed that the Doha meeting, with participation of special representatives from countries under the leadership of António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, would be a good opportunity to discuss controversial issues.

According to the Ministry’s statement, since no progress has been observed from the United Nations regarding this demand, participating in the Doha meeting would not be beneficial.

“If the United Nations understands the current realities of Afghanistan and does not come under the pressure of a few groups, there is a possibility of progress in the dialogue,” said the statement.

A few days ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Afghan delegation will participate in the meeting if the organization agreed with the requests of Islamic Emirate and shared the agenda of the Doha meeting.

The UN-led meeting on Afghanistan will be held in Doha the capital of Qatar today.
