Wheat yields increased by 10% in Kandahar compared to other years

KABUL: The officials of the provincial Department of Kandahar’s Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock said that there has been a 10 percent increase in wheat yields compared to last year.

According to the officials of the Kandahar Agriculture Department, wheat has been planted on more than 96,000 hectares of land and 361 thousand metric tons of wheat will be obtained this year.

On the other hand, farmers have said that untimely rains and excessive water have damaged the wheat grains.

Mohammad Tahir, a farmer in the Arghandab district, said that the price of wheat reached 100 Afghanis and there has been a one percent increase in the yield compared to previous years.

He added that after receiving the crops, all economic problems of his family will be addressed.  He also asked the government to prevent the smuggling of Afghan wheat, so that we became self-sufficient in wheat.

Atiqullah is the head of a 22-member family and he earns sustenance for his family through his work.

According to him, his monthly expenses are 10,000 Afghanis. If he cannot find a job in one district, he travels to another district to provide a loaf of bread for his family.

He called on government officials to provide them with job opportunities.
