Minister Mansour: Afghanistan has capacity to produce 318 gigawatts of electricity

KABUL: The Acting Minister of Water and Energy Mullah Abdul Latif Mansour, participating in the 3rd meeting of energy ministers of the “Belt and Road Initiative,” member countries, held in China, on Wednesday stated that Afghanistan has the capacity to produce 318 gigawatts of electricity.

Highlighting Afghanistan’s potential energy production sources, including hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass, Minister Mansour noted that Afghanistan could generate 23,000 megawatts from hydropower, 76,000 megawatts from wind, 222,000 megawatts from solar energy, up to 3,500 megawatts from geothermal resources, and 4,000 megawatts from biomass, according to a statement from the ministry.

He expressed hope that in the coming decades, Afghanistan would achieve significant advancements in electricity production utilizing these resources.

Mr. Mansour emphasized that achieving reliable energy access, energy security, and balance in energy provision are essential conditions for the progress of Afghan society in social and economic sectors.
