KABUL: Turkey’s Chief Prosecutor has requested the judicial authorities to transfer Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, along with four of his aides, to prison until a court hearing is held.
Reuters reported this morning that the request was made despite ongoing protests by thousands of Turkish citizens in support of the Istanbul mayor.
Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, was arrested last week along with dozens of others on charges of “terrorism and corruption.”
In a statement, Imamoglu’s office rejected the allegations and described them as “unimaginable accusations.”
A court in Turkey is set to decide today, Sunday, on the fate of Ekrem Imamoglu.
Meanwhile, protests by thousands of supporters of the detained mayor have entered their fourth night, with demonstrators demanding the unconditional release of Mr. Imamoglu and his companions.
