U.S. Congress receives bill to sanction Pakistan’s army chief

KABUL: A number of members of the U.S. Congress have introduced a bill aimed at sanctioning General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan.

The Hill agency reported on Monday night, that Republican Representative Joe Wilson and Democratic Representative Jimmy Panetta presented the bill titled “Democracy in Pakistan” to the House of Representatives, calling for sanctions against Munir.

This bill was drafted in response to the repression of political opponents in Pakistan, including the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The U.S. media outlet, which obtained a copy of the bill, noted that sanctions against Munir are set to be imposed within 180 days.

Also, the bill emphasizes the need to identify other key individuals involved in the suppression of political dissent in Pakistan.

This comes at a time when Imran Khan has been imprisoned for over two years, despite widespread protests by his supporters demanding his release.
