KABUL: Various political parties and thousands of Muslim citizens in India have protested against the proposed amendments to the “Waqf” law, considering it detrimental to the interests of Muslims, The Hindu media outlet reported today.
According to the protesters, the amendments made to the Waqf law by the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sent to Parliament for approval would result in unprecedented government control over Waqf properties and restrict religious freedoms.
With launching widespread demonstrations, the demonstrators were demanding that the amendments to the Waqf law not be approved.
The Waqf law pertains to properties designated for public benefit, including mosques, schools, hospitals, clinics, and agricultural land.
Previously, under Modi’s government, non-Muslims were not allowed to be part of the state committees overseeing the implementation of the law, but the government has now included non-Muslims in these committees.
According to the reports, the value of Waqf properties in India, which the government seeks to amend the law for, exceeds $14 billion.
