FM Muttaqi, Iranian President hold talks on addressing refugee issues

KABUL: The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate, Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, during his stay in Tehran, met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations.
According to a statement from Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal, the ministry’s deputy spokesperson on Sunday, in the meeting, the two sides also discussed addressing the situation of Afghan refugees residing in Iran.
President Pezeshkian acknowledged the longstanding ties between the two neighboring countries and expressed Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation across various sectors, including political, economic, and humanitarian areas, according to the statement.
He also reiterated his country’s commitment to facilitating the dignified return of Afghan refugees, ensuring that the process respects their rights and well-being.
Muttaqi expressed gratitude for Iran’s hospitality towards Afghan refugees over the past decades and highlighted the Islamic Emirate’s priority to create conducive conditions for their voluntary repatriation.
He emphasized the need for a gradual and coordinated approach to ensure the safe and sustainable return of Afghan nationals.
Additionally, the acting Foreign Minister delivered a speech at the Tehran Dialogue Forum, attended by officials and delegations from numerous countries around the world.
