KABUL: Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) said today that a project to generate 43.2 MW of wind power and 5 MW of solar power worth $64 million, during a ceremony, has been commenced in Herat province.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, stated that Afghanistan currently relies on imported electricity, which is costly and not a reliable long-term solution.
He emphasized that efforts are underway to utilize domestic capacities to meet the country’s energy needs while also fostering a transparent and secure investment environment.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abdul Bari Omar, the CEO of DABS, mentioned that Afghanistan could produce 250 MW of electricity for decades, but now a new production project is being launched every week. He highlighted that nearly all electricity development projects are being implemented using domestic resources and budgets, without any foreign assistance.
According to DABS, the country possesses significant potential for electricity generation from hydro, thermal, and wind resources, which requires investment. These capacities demonstrate Afghanistan’s compatibility with climate change, renewable energy, and eco-friendly solutions.
