KABUL: Based on a special decree of the esteemed Amir al-Mu’minin, hundreds of prisoners have been released from the country’s jails, the Supreme Court of Afghanistan said in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the statement, a total of 5,615 prisoners have either been released or had their sentences reduced.
According to the Supreme Court, 1,559 prisoners from eight provinces, including Kabul, Nangarhar, Laghman, Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa, Khost, and Nimroz, have been released, while 950 others have received sentence reductions.
The statement noted: “ The prisoners who had shown reform, complied with traditions, received training in religious and other areas, and were eligible for pardon or sentence reduction were identified and listed.”
It appears that the implementation of this decree is ongoing by the designated committee.
The leader of the Islamic Emirate often grants pardons to prisoners during special occasions such as Eid, along with reductions in some sentences.
