KABUL: The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum said on Tuesday that the exploration and extraction contract for the Amu Darya oil field between the ministry and the contractor company “Afshin,” has been terminated.
Homayoun Afghan, spokesperson for the Ministry emphasized that the 25-year contract was terminated due to Afshin’s failure to meet its commitments. He noted that the decision to terminate the contract was made after a monitoring committee identified the company’s non-compliance with its obligations.
The termination of the Amu Darya oil field contract was executed following a proposal from the Deputy PM Office for Economic Affairs and a decree from the Prime Minister’s office.
The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has requested interested companies to submit their applications to the ministry for financial and legal settlement with Afshin, in accordance with international norms and principles.
It is noteworthy that the Amu Darya oil field is one of Afghanistan’s most significant oil regions, located in the northern part of the country, and the contract with the Chinese company Afshin was signed at the beginning of 2023.
