KABUL: Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, has sharply criticized the activities of the United Nations, calling for fundamental reforms or even alternative approaches.
In a post on his X account, Khalilzad noted that the world, particularly the U.S., allocates over $67 billion annually to support the UN and its related agencies, yet the organization’s success rate in achieving peace and security is “zero.”
He also criticized UN Secretary-General António Guterres, stating that Guterres often repeats ideas that do not lead to practical change.
Khalilzad emphasized, “The United Nations continues to fund missions whose original objectives have been lost, merely organizing annual reports and meetings.”
He stressed that if the UN does not implement fundamental reforms, then President Donald Trump should consider creating alternatives, and if that is not feasible, at the very least, the U.S. should reduce its financial contributions.
