KABUL: Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. representative for peace in Afghanistan, in a statement on his X today called the method of expelling Afghan migrants from Iran incorrect and condemn it.
He stated that the approach taken by the Iranian government for the expulsion of Afghan migrants was “sudden and uncoordinated” with Afghan officials.
He noted: “Some Afghan refugees are being accused of collaborating with Israeli intelligence. Even if a few of them have been recruited by Israel, only those individuals should be held accountable, not the tens of thousands of others.”
Khalilzad acknowledged that Iran may have the right to expel migrants, but it should be done in a way that does not lead to a humanitarian crisis.
In recent weeks, the forced expulsion of Afghan migrants from Iran has intensified, with United Nations statistics indicating that nearly 200,000 people have been expelled from the country.
