Trump continues attacks on Washington allies; Japan and South Korea threatened with 25% tariffs

KABUL: In an ongoing trade war characterized by Donald Trump’s presidency, the U.S.’s two key allies Japan and South Korea have now found themselves in the crosshairs of a proposed 25% tariff on imports.

Reuters reported this morning that the U.S. President has sent letters to leaders of 14 countries, including the Presidents of Japan and South Korea, stating that starting from the beginning of next month (August), all imported goods from Seoul and Tokyo will be subject to the 25% tariff.

The letters were also sent to leaders of Thailand, Tunisia, and Serbia, in addition to Japan and South Korea.

Trump warned that any reactions from these countries would be met with an equal response.

He stated: “If for any reason you decide to increase your tariffs, whatever number you choose will be added to our 25% tariff.”

Japan and South Korea are considered major trading partners and suppliers to the United States.
