KABUL: The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, will soon meet with his U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio, in Malaysia.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, told the Russian state-run TASS news agency today that the meeting between Lavrov and Rubio is being organized on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
She stated, “I can confirm that such a meeting is being coordinated.”
Reports indicate that the Russian Foreign Minister is on a two-day trip to Malaysia to participate in the ASEAN meetings.
No details have been provided regarding the topics to be discussed between the senior diplomats of the U.S. and Russia.
The series of ASEAN meetings, titled “The 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting,” is ongoing from July 8 to 11 in Malaysia. Delegations from the U.S., China, India, Russia, and the European Union are participating as partners.
ASEAN member countries consist of 10 Southeast Asian nations that have been holding annual meetings since 1967 to promote political, economic, security, and cultural cooperation.
