UNAMA chief visits Herat; meets with governor Islamjar

HERAT: Roza Otunbayeva, the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has arrived in country’s Western province of Herat, the governor’snor press office said in a statement today.
According to the statement, in the meeting Otunbayeva said that the purpose of Otunbayeva’s visit is to assess the situation of Afghan returnees at the Islam Qala border. She emphasized the importance of raising the voices of migrants to the international community and mobilizing international assistance for them.
She also noted that part of her visit to Islam Qala would focus on evaluating the activities of international aid organizations assisting Afghan migrants.
Otunbayeva praised the Afghan government’s efforts so far in managing the return of migrants.
Governor Islamjar reaffirmed that the Afghan government has been fully committed to supporting returnees since the onset of their forced repatriation, providing cash, in-kind, and food assistance without hesitation.
The statement also mentioned that the governor requested Otunbayeva to conduct a thorough assessment of the situation of migrants to ensure necessary cooperation in addressing their needs.
This comes amid ongoing forced repatriations of Afghan migrants from Iran.
