KABUL: Officials of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development have announced that 143 check dams have been constructed at a cost of 426 million Afghanis in several provinces over the past year.
Mawlavi Mirza Mohammad Shakib, head of the ministry’s office, during a program outlining the achievements of government institutions in Kabul, said on Thursday that the check dams were built across 142 districts in 13 provinces to manage floodwaters and water resources.
Additionally, Mullah Mohammad Younus Akhundzada, acting Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, highlighted the construction of large dams “Qadis Khordak” in Badghis province and “Kaj Samad” in Farah province as significant ongoing projects.
The Badghis project is estimated to cost 13 million USD, while the Farah project is budgeted at 2 billion Afghanis, both funded through the ministry.
Akhundzada noted that 843 safe water supply networks have been constructed across the country over the past year.
He also reported ongoing work on 559 additional safe water supply networks in various provinces, which will provide access to clean drinking water for thousands of families.
Moreover, Akhundzada emphasized that work continues on 737 development projects, including check dams, canals, karez systems, and retaining walls across various provinces.
According to ministry officials, construction is currently underway on 195 kilometers of roads in several provinces. They cited the Wakhan Corridor in Badakhshan as a key project, with 49 kilometers already completed and work on its second phase progressing rapidly.
