The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that, in the aftermath of the quake, tsunami warnings have been issued for areas including Hawaii and Alaska in the U.S., parts of Japan, and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.

Residents of Honolulu, the capital and largest city of Hawaii, have evacuated to higher ground in response to the warning.

Meanwhile, Japan’s meteorological agency has reported the first tsunami wave measuring 30 centimeters in height in the city of Nemuro, located on Hokkaido’s coast.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has indicated that waves ranging from 1 to 3 meters are possible along the coasts of Hawaii, Japan, Chile, and the Solomon Islands.

It has also warned that tsunami heights in the Russian islands and Ecuador could exceed 3 meters.

Experts said that it is still too early to discuss the risks of second and third waves, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain in elevated locations until the situation stabilizes.

This earthquake is being recognized as one of the largest in recorded history.
