Rail agreement and contract worth $5 million signed between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan

KABUL: Officials of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works and representatives of a Turkmen company have signed a rail agreement and a contract for the development of the Torghundi port in Herat, valued at $5 million.

The Ministry of Public Works on Thursday, that the investment will be made by Turkmenistan, focusing on constructing warehouses for unloading and loading at the Torghundi-Herat port.

According to the ministry, the agreement aims to coordinate the rail transport network between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, enhance bilateral cooperation, increase transfers, and facilitate trade for merchants.

The agreement and contract were signed by Mawlavi Mohammad Ishaq Sahibzada, Deputy Minister of Railways, and Sardar Qurbanov, head of the Turkmen company “Dimirul Gorlušik,” in the presence of the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Kabul.

Standardizing and developing rail ports based on needs is mentioned as one of the goals of these signed documents.

This comes as the construction of rail lines and railway transfers in Afghanistan has been expanding over the past four years.
