Afghan, Uzbek officials sign four contracts for power projects worth $234 million

KABUL: Energy officials of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan signed four contracts for the transmission and development of electricity in Afghanistan, totaling $243 million.
According to a statement from Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), the contracts were signed today in Kabul in the presence of senior officials from both countries.
According to DABS, the contracts include the transmission line of 500 kV from Surkhan to Dasht Alwan, a 220 kV line from Kabul to Sheikh Masri, the development of the Torghundi substation, and several other substations within Afghanistan.
Dr. Abdul Bari Omar, the CEO of Breshna, stated that the contracts will facilitate the transmission of electricity from Uzbekistan into Afghanistan, extending from the north to Nangarhar province in the east.
He noted that the implementation of the projects would reduce electricity outages and provide energy for industrialists.
Meanwhile, Jurabek Mirzamukhamedov, the Energy Minister of Uzbekistan, emphasized that his country supports a stable and advanced Afghanistan.
He highlighted the importance of the signed projects and assured that Tashkent would utilize all available resources to ensure their success.
The implementation of the projects is expected to be completed and operational within the next 18 months. However, Breshna’s statistics indicate that Afghanistan, despite having the capacity to produce 300,000 megawatts of electricity from various resources, currently imports 75% of its electricity needs from neighboring countries.
