KABUL: As the deadline for the forced expulsion of Afghan migrants from Pakistan approaches (September 1), Filippo Grandi, the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has called for an extension.
Grandi in a post on his X account on Tuesday evening has also urged the resumption of visa issuance for Afghan applicants, particularly students studying in Pakistan.
So far, the Pakistani government has not responded to the UN official’s request.
About a month ago, the Pakistani government set a deadline for 1.2 million Afghan migrants holding POR cards to leave the country, the deadline will expire in four days (September 1, 2025).
With the deadline approaching, voluntary returns of Afghan migrants from Pakistan have intensified.
Reports indicate that hundreds of Afghan families are leaving Pakistan daily, crossing through the Durand Line into their home country.
