KABUL: Indrika Ratwatte, the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has stated that the cholera outbreak in Parwan province is causing serious concern.
In a video clip shared on UNAMA’s Facebook page, he stated that 74 cases of cholera have been reported across seven districts in the province following his recent visit to a cholera treatment center.
According to him, drought and adverse weather conditions have heightened worries about the spread of cholera. He emphasized that, in addition to establishing a 50-bed treatment center, discussions have been held with local authorities in Parwan to implement further measures to prevent the disease’s spread.
He underscored the urgent need for increased medical supplies and necessary actions in the areas of water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Ratwatte added that the treatment center currently provides 24-hour medical services by both male and female doctors, and essential medications have been distributed to the center.
Cholera is an acute and dangerous disease that spreads through contaminated water and food.
