Belgium to recognize Palestine at UN assembly

KABUL: Maxim Provo, Belgium’s Foreign Minister, has announced that the country will recognize Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly meeting.
Reuters reported this morning that the Foreign Minister emphasized that Belgium will join the signatories of the “New York Declaration,” paving the way for the establishment of two states (an independent Palestine and Israel) to coexist peacefully.
He stated: “The decision is made in light of the humanitarian tragedy in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, and in response to Israeli violence that violates international law.”
Simultaneously, Belgium has also announced its intention to impose 12 “decisive” sanctions on Israel, including a ban on imports.
According to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, international pressure on Israel regarding its nearly two-year actions in the Gaza Strip is increasing daily.
Previously, countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, France, and Canada have also announced that they will recognize Palestine during this month’s UN General Assembly.
