Minister of Economy calls for resumption of “New Kabul City” water supply project by Japan

KABUL: Qari Din Mohammad Hanif, the Minister of Economy, has urged Japan to resume the suspended drinking water supply project for “New Kabul City” during a meeting with Mai Kyu Iizawa, Deputy Chief of the Japanese Embassy in Kabul.
The Ministry of Economy said in a statement today, that Dr. Mohammad Naeem Wardak, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, was also present at the meeting.
The Minister of Economy stated that the drinking water supply project for New Kabul City, which was funded by Japan, was halted in December 2020.
In the statement, Qari Din Mohammad Hanif mentioned that the project was being implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and has been left incomplete for nearly five years.
Mai Kyu Iizawa assured the Minister of Economy that he would discuss the issue of the project’s suspension and its resumption with officials in his government.
It is noteworthy that the drinking water supply project for New Kabul City is being implemented at a cost of $24 million, with Japan as the financial supporter of the project.
