KABUL: Zalmay Khalilzad, U.S. Special Representative for Afghan Peace and a critic of Pakistan’s policies, has described Islamabad’s airstrike on Kabul as a failure.
Khalilzad responded to the attack on Friday night, noting that following the incident, the Pakistani Defense Minister and Army Chief expressed their willingness to visit Kabul.
He stated, “Pakistani warplanes flew over Kabul and broke the sound barrier. At the same time, Afghans are preparing to respond, with some leaders emphasizing immediate retaliation. The potential for wider conflict and instability is increasing.”
Khalilzad emphasized that in such circumstances, diplomacy could be a saving grace for relations between Kabul and Washington.
He urged countries with influence over Pakistan to increase pressure on Islamabad to prevent a larger conflict.
It is worth noting that the airstrike by Pakistan faced strong condemnation from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense, which described it as a violation of national sovereignty.
