Khalilzad: Pakistan’s current strategy ineffective, continuing it would be a “mistake”

KABUL: Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation, stated in response to the recent military clashes between Kabul and Islamabad that the current strategy of the Pakistani government is ineffective and that the country is in a very dire situation.
In a post on his X account on Sunday night he added that continuing the current approach by the Pakistani government would be a “mistake,” and Islamabad should put an end to it.
He emphasized that better relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan are of “vital” benefit to both countries. Khalilzad urged Pakistan to engage in diplomacy and initiate negotiations with both Afghanistan and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The American diplomat, knowledgeable about Afghan and Pakistani affairs, suggested that Islamabad’s talks with the TTP should resume from where they were halted during the tenure of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
So far, the Pakistani government has not responded to Khalilzad’s statements.
This comes as the clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan have drawn reactions from neighboring countries, the region, and even the United States.
