UNAMA welcomes ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan, emphasizing protection of civilians

KABUL: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has welcomed the establishment of a ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan following military clashes.

In a statement released today, UNAMA reacted to the ceasefire between Kabul and Islamabad.

The mission reported that it had received figures of civilian casualties during the five-day conflict between the two countries and called for the protection of civilians.

According to UNAMA, recent clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan have significantly increased, resulting in numerous civilian deaths and injuries.

The statement noted that the highest number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan has been recorded in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province, where intense fighting occurred between local authorities and Pakistani forces on Wednesday.

UNAMA is still assessing the precise casualty figures, but current information indicates that at least 17 civilians have been martyred and 346 others injured in Spin Boldak.

The UN agency also reported 16 civilian casualties, including one death and 16 injuries, in the provinces of Paktia, Paktika, Kunar, and Helmand.

This comes as an airstrike by Pakistan on a residential area in Kabul yesterday resulted in civilian casualties.
