KANDAHAR: The Kandahar provincial officials of the Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock Department have reported a 214% increase in pomegranate exports from the province to foreign countries this year.
According to the department, approximately 22,000 tons of pomegranates from Kandahar have been exported to various countries this year (1404), compared to only 7,000 tons in the previous year (1403).
Countries such as Malaysia, Russia, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan have been the primary destinations for pomegranate exports from Kandahar.
The statement highlighted that the increase in pomegranate exports has been facilitated through coordination between the Agriculture Department, the Chamber of Commerce and Investment of Kandahar, and local traders.
This comes at a time when trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan has been halted for over a month.
This situation has prompted the Afghan government to seek alternative trade routes and reduce dependency on a single pathway for commerce.
