KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation recently, Reuters reported on Monday.
During the discussion, President Xi emphasized to his American counterpart that Taiwan’s return to Chinese territory is a crucial aspect of Beijing’s vision for a global order.
The Chinese state news agency reported that Xi stated, “China and the United States once fought together against fascism and militarism, and now we must cooperate to protect the achievements of World War II. Taiwan’s return to China is an inseparable part of the international order established after the war.”
Meanwhile, in a message posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump did not mention Taiwan. He stated, “Our relationship with China is very strong! This call follows up on our highly successful meeting in South Korea three weeks ago. Since then, significant progress has been made on both sides to maintain and update agreements.”
Reports indicate that Trump has accepted Xi Jinping’s invitation to visit China.
Beijing’s emphasis on Taiwan’s return to its territory comes despite the previous stance of the Taiwanese government, which has stated that any potential unification is a matter for the Taiwanese citizens to decide.
