KABUL: Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, stated that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has pursued a path of regional cooperation and self-sufficiency in Afghanistan despite Western sanctions over the past four years.
He made the remarks during a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday night, which addressed the situation in Afghanistan.
In his statement, the Russian representative criticized the ongoing pressures and sanctions from the West on Kabul, adding that the continuation of this policy would undermine the role of the international community in Afghanistan.
He also welcomed the government of Afghanistan’s efforts to combat the Islamic State (ISIS).
According to this senior Russian diplomat, contrary to Western perceptions, Afghanistan did not turn into a black hole after the return of the IEA nor did it fall apart.
The UN Security Council meeting regarding Afghanistan was held on Wednesday night, Kabul time.
