KABUL: Representatives from China and Russia condemned the U.S. naval blockade of Venezuela during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, accusing Washington of “illegal aggression and intimidation.”
The Associated Press reported that the emergency session of the Security Council took place on Tuesday night, where the delegates from Beijing and Moscow warned that blocking sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers in and around the country poses a threat to stability in Latin America and could lead to dangerous consequences.
Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, described the blockade as “an act of actual aggression and unlawful use of force,” holding Washington responsible for the humanitarian consequences arising from the current situation in Venezuela.
Meanwhile, the Chinese delegation echoed Russia’s stance, accusing the U.S. of “intimidation and destabilizing behavior.” Beijing also supported Caracas’s call for the UN Security Council to convene an emergency session.
This comes as U.S. President Donald Trump recently urged Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to relinquish power and cease resistance.
