World must assist Afghan farmers with alternative livelihoods, official

KABUL: Dmitry Zhirnov, the Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan, met with Shaikh Abdul Rahman Munir, the Deputy Minister for Counter Narcotics at the Ministry of Interior, to discuss collaborative efforts in combating drug issues.

The media office of the Ministry of Interior said in a statement today, that during the discussion, the Deputy Minister emphasized that Afghanistan expects the world, particularly Russia, to assist in preventing the cultivation and trafficking of drugs, as well as providing alternative livelihoods for Afghan farmers.

He also stressed that drug-related issues are a global challenge that requires extensive international cooperation for effective resolution.

The Ministry of Interior reported that the Russian Ambassador commended the efforts made in combating drug issues.

The statement further stated that both parties underscored the importance of strengthening joint cooperation in the fight against drugs and pledged to continue bilateral interaction and collaboration on this matter.

This comes at a time when the Afghan government’s efforts to address cultivation, production, trafficking, sales, usage, and treatment of drug addiction have been recognized by the international community and the United Nations over the past four years.
