KABUL: Hussain Alawi, an advisor to the Prime Minister of Iraq, has announced that around 5,000 Iraqi nationals have joined the Russian military.
Alawi stated in an interview with Al Arabiya that it is difficult to determine the exact number of Iraqis in the Russian army, but reports suggest the figure is approaching 5,000. He indicated that Baghdad is closely monitoring this situation and is making efforts to prevent these recruitments through consultations with Moscow.
Meanwhile, Faiq Zidan, the head of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, emphasized that Iraqi law considers participation of Iraqi nationals in armed conflicts of other countries without official government permission a crime, punishable by imprisonment.
Zidan made the remarks during a meeting with National Security Advisor Qassem Al-Araji and members of the “Amr Diwani” committee.
This comes at a time when the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is ongoing, with reports emerging about the involvement of foreign forces in this war.
