Former Venezuelan President Maduro pleads not guilty in first U.S. court appearance

KABUL: The first court session for Nicolás Maduro, the former President of Venezuela, and his wife took place on Monday night in New York City three days after their arrest by U.S. special forces.
According to Reuters, during the proceedings, Mr. Maduro, speaking through an interpreter, declared his innocence and referred to himself as the current President of Venezuela, a statement the presiding judge interrupted.
Cilia Flores, Nicolás Maduro’s wife, also pleaded not guilty during the court session.
Meanwhile, dozens of Venezuelan protesters, both in support of and against Maduro, gathered outside the courthouse to demonstrate.
The next court session for Nicolás Maduro is scheduled for March 17 of this year (approximately two and a half months from now).
According to reports, Maduro’s attorney stated that due to the “military kidnapping” of Mr. Maduro, a tough legal battle in court might ensue.
