Oman’s Al-Busaidi Tehran visit sparks speculation of message from Washington

KABUL: In the midst of widespread public protests in Iran, Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi, the Omani Foreign Minister, has arrived in Tehran for an official visit and meetings with his Iranian counterpart, Dr. Sayed Abbas Araghchi.

The Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement said on Saturday night, that the meeting emphasized the necessity of reducing tensions and the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as fundamental approaches, promoting peaceful coexistence through positive collaboration and mutual trust-building among regional countries.

The statement also mentioned that the foreign ministers discussed developments in the Middle East, regional security, efforts to de-escalate tensions, and several current international issues.

Previously, Oman has been regarded as a reliable intermediary in discussions between the U.S. and Iran regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

As Iran has accused the U.S. of supporting the protesters in the country, it remains unclear whether this senior Omani diplomat is carrying a message from Washington to Tehran.

This comes at a time when the Iranian Foreign Minister has stated that while the country does not seek war, it is prepared for both military engagement and political dialogue, contingent upon mutual respect in dealings with the U.S.
