Iran protests death toll hits 544 as Guterres voices shock

KABUL: On the fifteenth day of protests in Iran, the country’s Human Rights Organization, known as “Hrana,” reported on Sunday evening that 544 demonstrators have been killed.
Meanwhile, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, expressed in a message on X that he is “shocked” by reports of violence and excessive use of force against protesters, resulting in deaths and injuries.
Guterres emphasized the need to fully respect and protect the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and peaceful protest, urging the Iranian government to exercise restraint and avoid unnecessary and disproportionate actions.
However, Hrana’s report confirms the deaths of 544 individuals during the protests, with investigations into many other cases ongoing.
Additionally, over 10,681 people have been transferred to prisons following their arrests.
According to Hrana, protests are currently taking place in 585 locations across 186 cities in 31 provinces of the country.
In contrast, the President of Iran recently stated that the events of the past two weeks in the country represent chaos and turmoil rather than legitimate protests.
Masoud Pezeshkian noted that individuals engaged in these protests have set public properties on fire, including mosques, community centers, vehicles, banks, and homes.
