KABUL: Amid rising tensions between the U.S. and the Iranian government, international media reports indicate that an order has been issued for the evacuation of some U.S. troops from the Al Udeid military base in Qatar.
Reuters citing three diplomats reported on Wednesday that the order was given following Washington’s warnings of possible military action against Iran, aimed at protecting the lives of personnel stationed at Al Udeid.
The U.S. Embassy in Doha and the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not responded to Reuters’ requests regarding such an order.
In response to threats from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a military strike against Iran, the Iranian government warned that in the event of such an action, U.S. bases and facilities in the region would be within the reach of Iranian armed forces.
Al Udeid Air Base is considered the largest U.S. base in the Middle East, housing approximately 10,000 military personnel.
