Journalist Safety Committee Head: MoUs key to enhancing journalists’ capacity and supporting media

KABUL: Abdul Jamil Waqaar, head of the Afghanistan Journalist Safety Committee, called the Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) between the Omid Media Network and educational institutions important as they can fulfill the shortage of professional and trained journalists while providing valuable opportunities for the education and advancement of the youth.

According to Radio Omid correspondent, Waqaar made the remarks today during a conference held to sign a tri-partite Memorandum of Understanding among the Omid Media Network and several educational institutions, including Kabul University.

The head of the Journalist Safety Committee noted that the Omid Media Network has carried out activities over the past three years that have been well-received by the public and society, and the network is continuing to progress.

Waqaar urged the government to provide financial support to media outlets, simplify the licensing process, and reduce taxes to facilitate media activities.

He also stated that while there have been improvements in access to information, it is essential to enhance coordination between government offices and spokespersons in the provinces.

Referring to the need for media legislation, Waqaar highlighted the existing issue of restrictions on filming in some provinces, emphasizing that it is crucial to provide solutions in this regard.

He stressed that by fully supporting domestic media, negative foreign propaganda can be countered effectively.

It is worth noting that offering useful and educational programs is a priority for Radio Omid’s broadcasting efforts.
