KABUL: The Economic Commission, recently approved the fishery sector development plan to establish 7,700 fish farming farms on an area of 6,500 hectares in various parts of the country.
At the Economic Commission meeting chaired by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Deputy PM for Economic Affairs, the fishery sector development plan was discussed and subsequently approved, his office said in a statement today.
The statement stated that the implementation of this plan will create direct job opportunities for 50,000 individuals and indirect jobs for another 250,000.
The meeting, also approved the national agricultural development policy after thorough discussions, said the statement.
The stated objectives of the policy include the mechanization of the agriculture and livestock sectors, the development of agricultural research and extension systems, irrigation management, support for investment in agriculture, irrigation, and livestock, as well as improving access to quality agricultural and livestock products.
This comes at a time when fish farmers in Herat province reported that their sales had doubled after border closures between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
