KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin may meet next week, The New York Times, citing reliable sources, reported on Wednesday evening.
In the meantime, Trump tweeted that his special representative, Steve Witkoff, had a “very constructive” meeting with President Putin.
According to the New York Times, Trump, in a phone call with several European leaders, expressed his intention to first meet with his Russian counterpart and then hold a trilateral meeting involving Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and himself.
Trump stated that there is a high likelihood that this meeting will take place very soon.
His remarks followed Witkoff’s meeting with the Russian president in Moscow, just two days before Trump’s deadline for ending the war in Ukraine (August 8, 2025).
Previously, Trump had given Putin until August 8 to end the conflict in Ukraine, warning of severe sanctions against Moscow if he failed to do so.
