KABUL: As a result of heavy rainfall and flooding in Nangarhar province, the strategic Torkham-Jalalabad highway has been closed to traffic.
Local reporter of Radio Omid reported this morning that the highway was blocked following the destruction of the “Pul-e-Safid” bridge in the 28 Wiala area of the Ghani Khil district.
The closure has left thousands stranded on both sides of the highway.
Local officials from the Nangarhar governor’s office have confirmed that the districts of “Spin Ghar, Chaparhar, Rodat, Surkh Rod, and Haskamina” have experienced heavy rainfall and flooding.
According to the office, the flooding in these districts has caused significant human and financial losses.
In the Chaparhar district, the flood swept away four residents, three of whom have been rescued, while one remains missing.
Local authorities have emphasized that the information provided is preliminary and that further details will be shared later.
This comes after the Meteorological Directorate of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation recently warned of heavy rainfall in ten provinces, including Nangarhar, today and tomorrow.
