KABUL: The death toll from a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan has risen to 12, with two others injured, authorities said.
The Afghan Red Crescent Society said in a statement that the quake’s epicenter was in Badakhshan province, warning that the number of casualties may increase.
Rescue and medical teams have been deployed to affected areas and have begun emergency response efforts.
Earlier, local officials in Kabul province confirmed that eight members of a single family were martyred in the Gusfand Dara area following the quake.
The tremor was also felt in neighboring Pakistan and Tajikistan.
