KABUL: The permanent and non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have approved a resolution for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The draft resolution, prepared by ten non-permanent members of the Security Council, did not face any opposing votes during the voting process.
The United States, which had vetoed previous ceasefire resolutions, abstained from voting this time.
The resolution 2,728 of the United Nations Security Council includes an immediate ceasefire in the blessed month of Ramadan in the Gaza Strip, the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas, and ensuring access to humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.
The resolution was adopted after the United Nations Secretary-General visited the border town of Rafah and met with the war displaced in Gaza.
Hamas has welcomed the adoption of this resolution in a statement and expressed its readiness to engage in negotiations for the release of hostages.
