KABUL: The Ministry of Energy and Water completed several major water and energy projects over the past year and has also begun implementing a number of new projects, said Mawlavi Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, during the “Government in the Mirror of the Press” program.
According to Radio Omid, Mujahid said that two major dams in Kabul and Zabul provinces and a water diversion tunnel in Farah were completed, and during the same period, 45 check dams were constructed and put into operation, while work on 16 riverbank protection projects was also completed.
Mujahid said the water projects created employment opportunities for around 11,500 people.
In the energy sector, he said an agreement had been signed to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity from domestic sources, while feasibility studies and design work for the Lory Dam had also begun.
Efforts to resume the 40-megawatt gas-fired power generation project in Jawzjan are continuing, he said, adding that work on projects to generate 40, 100 and 130 megawatts of solar power in several provinces has also begun or is set to begin.
According to Mujahid, electricity projects worth billions of Afghanis have been launched in Jawzjan, Faryab and Sar-e Pul provinces.
He further said that energy-sector projects have created employment opportunities for 3,770 people.
