KABUL: Indian police arrested more than 2,000 protesters in New Delhi on Saturday, including the founder of the “Cockroach” youth movement, according to the report.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of the head of India’s Election Commission, accusing him of corruption in elections.
According to Reuters, thousands of police officers and security personnel have been deployed across New Delhi and internet access and some public services have been suspended in certain areas, while markets have also been closed.
The United Nations has expressed concern over the mass arrests and urged Indian authorities to respect the right to peaceful protest.
India’s mission, however, rejected the UN’s concerns, describing them as interference in the country’s internal affairs.
